King's X is an interesting band. They are one of those artists labeled "highly underrated" in every article written about them. I remember seeing the front man, dUg Pinnick, in the late 80's and thinking 'who is this guy?'.
Song#1: Over My Head
Over my head it's loud and clear
It's going to my head
Music, music, I hear music
Music, I hear music, music
Music oh oh oh lord
Music over my head
I, I, I, hear it so clear
I, I, I, hear it so dear
I know, I know, I know I'm not crazy
It's going to my head
Music, music, I hear music
Music, I hear music, music
Music oh oh oh lord, yeah
Music over my head (she was singing, yeah)
Music, music, I hear music
Music, I hear music
Yeah
Grandma used to sing
Grandma used to sing
Everynight while she was prayin'
Over my head, over my head
I hear music oh lord
Music, music, I hear music
Music, I hear music, music
Music oh oh oh lord
Music over my head (music over my head)
Music, music, I hear music
Music, I hear music, music
Music oh oh oh lord
Music over my head (music over my head)
Can't you hear it
I, I, I hear it, don't you hear it
Listen, it's all around me
It is everywhere
Over my, my, my head
No, you sing it, sing it
Just like yesterday
Oh, I'm talking, talking, talking in my sleep
Oh, I can feel it
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah dance to the music

Song#2: Black Flag
Well, that's all for now, folks. If you use Amazon music, here is a link to my King's X playlist.
dUg Pinnick |
My opinion on this band has varied over the years. Do I like them? Do I not? I've come to the conclusion that I really like some songs and really dislike others, lol. dUg is the vocalist on 80 to 90% of their songs and the guitarist sings on the other 10-20%. I have accepted I simply do NOT like the guitarists voice. It's not bad or anything, I just strongly dislike it for some reason. What's your point, Nick? Well, my point is that we will not be talking about any songs sung by Ty Tabor. Good thing he is a kick-ass guitarist!
King's X is a three piece band, formed in Springfield, Missouri in ... 1979?! Holy crap, I didn't know that. Thanks Wikipedia! They have had the same three members since their creation. Another impressive statistic!
Ty Tabor (guitar & vocals), Jerry Gaskill (drums), dUg Pinnick (bass & vocals)... THENish |
Here are some of my favorite songs by King's X along with the lyrics and YouTube videos. There are many more that I could discuss here, but... I have a job you know 😎. I relate to dUg's lyrics more and more the older I get. Maybe someday I will meet him, you never know!
Song#1: Over My Head
Album: Gretchen Goes To Nebraska
Year: 1989
This is a great King's X song. Groovy riff, soulful vocals by dUg. They lyrics are pretty vague but, to me, they represent how music was/is always present in his his life. Starting when he was a kid hearing his grandma singing during prayer and following him through his life, hearing music 'over his head' at all times. I can relate, dUg!
Lyrics:
Over my head I hear music in the air

Music, I hear music, music
Music oh oh oh lord
Music over my head
I, I, I, hear it so clear

Song#2: Black Flag
Album: King's X
Year: 1992
This was the first King's X song I remember hearing. Super catchy! I never paid any attention to the lyrics back then. Turns out, they are all about perspective and how your outlook affects... everything. Much of the work I am doing today is trying to break out of the pattern of always judging things and just letting them be what they are. I don't want to keep seeing life thru a negative lens and putting 'black flags' on everything. We all have the ability to shift our perspective.... but it takes practice and vigilance!
Lyrics:
A year in a whole had taken it's toll
When I took a good look at me
And what a surprise the scope of my eyes
Could only see black
And I remember someone who was taking them two by two
And lately I'd become the one who'd have laughed at you too
There was a black flag on my morning
There was a black flag on my day
There was a black flag on everything around
And I was walkin' backwards again
Black flag, black flag
I walked in the day, my usual way
Lookin' through a two by four
It colored my view, I couldn't see you
Or maybe I just wouldn't
And I remember the time when the sunlight fell on my head
And lately I'd become a member of the walkin' dead
There was a black flag on my morning
There was a black flag on my day
There was a black flag on everything around
And I was walkin' backwards again
(Ah ah ah)
And I know that I was wrong
It was up to me
(Ah ah ah)
If I wanted to see
And I remember the day when I saw the mask on my face
And I knew that it was time to put the thing in it's place
I'd put the black flag on my morning
I'd put the black flag on my day
I'd put the black flag on everything around
And I was walkin' backwards again
Black flag on my morning
Black flag on my day
(Black flag)
I'd put the black flag on everything around
And I was walkin' backwards again
Black flag on my morning
Black flag on my day
(Black flag)
I'd put the black flag on everything around
And I was walkin' backwards again
(Ah ah)
It's was up to me
(Ah ah)
And I know that I wasn't wrong
Song #3: Complain
China boy standing up to a tank
Southern boy living in the house of yanks
If I can't seem to get my motorbike to crank
I complain
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
Easier
Small kid begging for a crumb of bread
Next kid bloated lying nearly dead
I wonder what to take for my aching head
I complain
Lots of people crying for a little rain
Whole nation learning how to live with pain
I don't know how I'm gonna clean this little stain
I complain
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
Complain
Complain
Black man singing Mississippi blues
Africa starves, a little baby too
I'm trying to figure out all the basketball rules
I complain
Mr. Rush Limbaugh giving me the facts
Treetops falling and the newsman yaks
I'm thinking about Carter
And how I'm gonna be taxed
Hey!
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
Complain– so much easier
So much!

Song #4: Pray
Lyrics
And if you feel what you think is true
If you found peace deep inside of you
If your faith made a mountain move for you then
Don't forget to pray for me, hear me now
If you think that Jesus has saved you
Mother Mary is waiting there for you
If you think that God has spoke to you then
Don't forget to pray for me, hear me now
Pray for me, pray for me
If you really do believe
Then don't forget to pray for me, hear me now
If you think there's heaven when you die
Waiting for you, freedom for your life
When you pray does Allah answer you?
Then don't forget to pray for me, hear me now
And if you live in the promised land
And your temple will be built again
If Moses brought you out of Pharaoh's hands
Then don't forget to pray for me, hear me now
Pray for me, pray for me
If you really do believe
Then don't forget to pray for me, hear me now
You know, every day I look at God
All around me, so near yet so far
If you think you're better off than me
Then don't forget to pray for me, oh, hear me now
Pray for me, pray for me
If you really do believe
Then don't forget to pray for me, hear me now
Don't forget to pray for me, hear me now
When I took a good look at me
And what a surprise the scope of my eyes

Song #3: Complain
Album: Dogman
Year: 1994
Dogman is my favorite album by King's X. It will surprise no one to know this is also considered their 'heaviest'. Lots of sludgy guitar on this one 💥. There are a lot of great songs on here like the title track and Shoes. Staying on the theme of perspectives; Complain is a wonderful way to slap yourself awake from the 'poor-me' syndrome and 'first world problems' disease. The "I'm trying to figure out all these basketball rules" line makes me smile every time.
Lyrics
Ozone disappearing in the sky
Budman asking us why ask why
If I could find my magazine this bug would die
I complain

Song #4: Pray
Album: XV
Year: 2008
XV was King's X's last album before a long break. It would be 16 years until their next, and most recent release, Three Sides of One. Pray is a simple song musically, but they perform it wonderfully. When the full guitar volume kicks in on the chorus, I always get a little hit of energy. I love the lyrics in this. In a nutshell, its saying if you think you have this whole God thing figured out and think I need 'saved' then go head and pray for me. In my experience (the only thing I can rely on absolutely), an individual HAS TO go on their own journey to find what they believe to be spiritually true. Claiming a particular religion out of fear of damnation or desire for acceptance is not real faith and it is no one's place, ever, to assume they have the correct answer on God and tell another what they should believe.

There is a ton of interesting stuff to be discovered in the King's X discography and I look forward to digging deeper for years to come.
