Time Traveling Wizzards

High Speed GTO album cover - pretty frickin sweet! ;0)

I don't recall exactly how I came across the band White Wizzard. What I do recall is that I found it hard to believe they were a current band.  Everything about this album tells me it was made around 1983.  Even the cheesy video they made for High Speed GTO (so awesome!).  It is not on YouTube but I found it on Vimeo, link below.

James-Paul Luna

High Speed GTO is a snapshot in time of a snapshot in time.  The members that recorded it had already broken up by the time the album was released. I guess when you have to travel back in time to make an album it puts a lot of stress on relationships 😃.  Since then White Wizzard have released several albums with different singers and guitarists but I don't really like any of them... only this first one (which is actually an EP with only 7 songs and is basically their demos from when they were trying to get signed to a label). The singer, James-Paul Luna, went on to form the band Holy Grail after leaving White Wizzard.  I do like some of Holy Grail's stuff but, again, it sounds like most of the modern "retro-metal".  You can tell it was produced recently.  High Speed GTO was made in 1983... I just know it was.  Just listen to it!!!

Track by track breakdown:

High Speed GTO: Two things are clear to me as soon as the song starts. 1. These guys are fans of Iron Maiden. 2. The singer's tone reminds me a bit of the Tesla lead singer.  Funny thing is that I don't really like Tesla because of the singer's voice... but I love that style/tone with this band.  It's not a huge powerful voice and he doesn't try to do too much with it.  He knows his skills and uses them perfectly.  One of my favorite parts of this song is the transition from the verses to the chorus.  It's almost like two different songs...I love that.

Celestina: This one has a little more of an 80's hair metal vibe.. but not the crappy hair metal (Poison..), the good stuff like Motley Crue and GnR ;0).  Great melodies, great guitar work.

Into The Night: I love how the intro breaks into the verse on this one.  Listening to this while writing this post I am realizing how many parts are in this song.  Intro / verse / pre-chorus / chorus... each with its own unique feel and riffage. Great instrumental section starting at 1:45 also.

March Of The Skeletons:  This one is my current favorite.  Listen to that bass!! Very Iron Maiden-y. Cool name too, right?  In the chorus I can picture those bastard skeletons marching away... 😂 💀

Megaladon: Another unique song where the music, lyrics, and performance produces great visuals in my mind of a big-ass shark beast tearing everything to shreds.  Check out these lyrics... just read them for the first time while writing this.  Creativity, bruh!

Denizen of creep seas
Born of ancient depths is he
From the world of heinous beasts
Beady eyes a thousand teeth
On the horizon
A mighty fin appears
Screaming to all
The creature of the sea is near
Twisting and thrashing
The necks of his prey, yeah
Death to all
All who dares cross his way
Across the land
Beneath the sea
Now the water clouds and rain
Mass of blackened cartilage
Savory feast is wrought with pain
Creature turns and strikes again
Stomachs drifting guts and fins
Eat your heart out from within
Jawing the flesh from the life of his foes
As he brings a taste of the terror below
Across the land
Beneath the sea
Flashing in and out of sight
Death upon the sea tonight
Bones afloat on murky stew
Hope for life is leaving you
Bound to be a stomachful
Crushed inside his giant skull
Caught amongst the horror stench
Tender finds are no defense
And before the time he strikes again
For now you'll know
That death is certain, yeah
Carry on you won't survive your destiny
Megalodon
Nightmare running after me
Across the land
Beneath the sea
Now the water clouds and rain
Mass of blackened cartilage
Bones afloat in murky stew
Hope for life is leaving you
Flashing in and outta sight
Death upon the sea tonight

Octane Gypsy:  This is the third song in my trifecta of perfection from this album. (High Speed GTO, March of the Skeletons, Octane Gypsy).  Again, heavily influenced by Iron Maiden but without some of the over-the-topness of Bruce Dickinson's wailing.  Don't get me wrong, Bruce is a legend, but many times his singing completely overpowers all the brilliant instrumentation.  Not so with this song.  Luna knows how to add to the song without taking it over.  After a very cool intro riff the verse kicks in (around 20 seconds in) and I always feel like I am behind the wheel cruising to a destination. "Open road, now it's time to fly."

In conclusion, if you are looking for a less pompous Iron Maiden with mediocre singing (I kid!.. kinda) from 2009 that traveled back to 1983 to make a seven song EP......  then congratulations!!!  Here it is!!!

Yes, I have a super cool picture disc.  Don't... be... jelly
